How to Choose Reflective Sheeting for Traffic Signs
Buyer checklist for reflective sheeting: performance grade, ASTM Type, RA class, color, print process, roll size, MOQ and sample path.
What is the fastest correct way to specify reflective sheeting?
Start with performance grade / ASTM Type, not with optical structure nicknames. Then lock application, color, print/converting process, and roll size. Finish with sample + TDS review before bulk.
Step-by-step checklist
- Name the job — permanent traffic sign, work zone device, delineator, or commercial sign.
- Pick a performance grade family — engineer grade, HIP, microprismatic traffic, long-distance, fluorescent, work zone, or flexible film.
- Write the ASTM Type from a TDS — Type is tested performance, not “glass bead = Type I”.
- Add EN/local class if required — RA1/RA2 only with standard/version named.
- List colors and geometry needs — observation and entrance angles matter for RA tables.
- Confirm process — screen, UV digital, plotter cut, slit, sheets.
- State size and quantity — e.g. 1220 mm × 45.7 m or 24/36/48 in × 50 yd; MOQ; destination port.
- Request sample + documents — TDS, SDS, RA/color report, installation guide.

Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Glass bead Type I please” | Structure ≠ Type | Quote Type from TDS |
| Using “Diamond Grade” as a generic grade | Trademark / multi-Type brand family | Use marketing grade + Type |
| Category-level outdoor life promises | Durability is per SKU/color | Read warranty conditions |
| Thin keyword-only product pages | Buyer ambiguity + SEO cannibalization | One authoritative grade/SKU page |
